Adventure on the Water Since 1986
The story of Apex Adventure began in 1986, when my father Hans Fankhauser brought rafting to life in Kirchdorf in Tyrol.
Originally, he planned to open a kayaking school – but it quickly became clear: rafting is more accessible for many people.
A shared nature experience that combines adventure, team spirit, and fun..
As early as the 1990s, our full-day tours on the Tiroler Ache became a regional highlight – complete with a relaxed BBQ break on the riverbank.
Our team grew, and more than ten rafting guides regularly paddled down the wildwater with guests. One of those guides took me along as a child – and to this day, he still paddles the Ache with us, full of passion.
Alongside rafting, my father established the guesthouse Sportpension Marienstetten, which later became known as the Mountain High Adventure Center under Hervé Chayroux.
Hervé expanded the outdoor program and founded today’s Hornpark St. Johann – a partner we are still closely connected with.
In 2021, the guesthouse was sold and renamed Gruppenhaus Alpenglück – now our starting point for many of our tours.
Who's behind Apex Adventure?
My name is Johannes Fankhauser.
I grew up on whitewater – even as a child, I helped out on my father's tours, was kayaking at the age of seven, and discovered my passion for paddling early on.
In 2005, I completed my training as a certified rafting and canyoning guide. Since then, I’ve led hundreds of tours – from family-friendly rafting trips to challenging whitewater stretches like the Ötztaler Ache (Class IV).
As a canyoning guide, I’ve worked in Tyrol, Salzburg, Italy, and Switzerland.
II hold the international IRF Trip Leader certification (WW IV), train new guides, and have completed extensive whitewater rescue training.
Why Apex Adventure?
Since 2022, I’ve continued our family tradition with Apex Adventure – offering a modern, high-quality, and safety-focused outdoor experience in Kirchdorf.
I’m especially proud to be the first provider in the region to offer guided packrafting tours – a unique mix of kayak feeling, personal responsibility, and group adventure.
Our mission is to inspire people of all ages to enjoy water sports in Tyrol –
with fun, team spirit, respect for nature, and a healthy dose of adventure!
